He is al-Shaykh, al-'Allaamah, al-Muhaddith, al-Haafidh : Haafidh ibn
Ahmad ibn 'Alee ibn Ahmad ibn 'Alee al-Hakamee.
He was born on the year 1342 H | 1924 C.E. in the village of Salam which
falls south west of Jazan.
He was raised by his parents and grew up herding goats and sheep for
them as was the custom at that time and place. Al-Haafidh, however,
exceeded his peers; he memorized the Quran while herding goats at the age
of twelve.
His Shaykh; 'Abdullah al-Qar'aawi – may Allah have mercy upon him – used
to travel to him and his brother; Muhammad ibn Ahmad in their village to
give them classes because their parents did not register them into
schools, and Haafidh was a student who quickly grasped what was being
taught to him. He remained as such until his father passed away in the
year 1360 H. He then freed himself to study under Shaykh 'Abdullah
al-Qar'aawi.
He was, as his Shaykh described him; "There is no equal at this time in
this area to him, in studying, authoring, teaching and managing." He
married his daughter to him and he fathered righteous students of
knowledge.
He died after he made Hajj on the eighteenth of Dhul Hijjah 1377 H in
Makkah al-Mukarramah while he was still a young man. He was buried in
Makkah and was a great loss to the Muslim Ummah. May Allah grant him an
expansive abode in Jannah.
