He is al-Shaykh, al-'Allaamah, al-Muhaddith, al-Haafidh : Haafidh ibn Ahmad ibn 'Alee ibn Ahmad ibn 'Alee al-Hakamee.
He was born on the year 1342 H | 1924 C.E. in the village of Salam which falls south west of Jazan.
He was raised by his parents and grew up herding goats and sheep for them as was the custom at that time and place. Al-Haafidh, however, exceeded his peers; he memorized the Quran while herding goats at the age of twelve.
His Shaykh; 'Abdullah al-Qar'aawi – may Allah have mercy upon him – used to travel to him and his brother; Muhammad ibn Ahmad in their village to give them classes because their parents did not register them into schools, and Haafidh was a student who quickly grasped what was being taught to him. He remained as such until his father passed away in the year 1360 H. He then freed himself to study under Shaykh 'Abdullah al-Qar'aawi.
He was, as his Shaykh described him; "There is no equal at this time in this area to him, in studying, authoring, teaching and managing." He married his daughter to him and he fathered righteous students of knowledge.
He died after he made Hajj on the eighteenth of Dhul Hijjah 1377 H in Makkah al-Mukarramah while he was still a young man. He was buried in Makkah and was a great loss to the Muslim Ummah. May Allah grant him an expansive abode in Jannah.
He authored numerous books numbering up to fifteen, some were printed and others remain in manuscript. He authored them even though he was occupied with teaching and managing schools.

ولد سنة 1342 هـ بقرية "السلام" التابعة لمدينة "المضايا" الواقعة في الجنوب الشرقي لمدينة جازان
ونشأ الشيخ "حافظ" في كنف أبيه وأمه, وكان يرعى لهما الغنم والماشية جريا على عادة المجتمع في ذلك الوقت, ولكن حافظ امتاز عن فتيان مجتمعه -فقد كان آية في الذكاء وسرعة الحفظ- فلقد حفظ القرآن وهو يرعى الغنم لأهله وعمره لم يتجاوز الثانية عشرة, وكان الشيخ عبد الله القرعاوي رحمه الله يتردد إليه وإلى أخيه محمد بن أحمد في قريتهما ويلقي عليهما الدروس لكون والدهما لم يرض بانتقالهما إلى المدرسة وكان "حافظ" ملهما يفهم كل ما يلقى إليه من الدروس بسرعة ,ومكث على هذه الحال حتى توفي والده في عام 1360 هـ ومن ثم تفرغ للدراسة والتحصيل ولازم شيخه "القرعاوي" فبرز في دراساته وأثمر وأجاد الشعر والنثر - فكان كما قال عنه شيخه: ليس له في وقته نظير بالتحصيل والتأليف والتعليم والإدارة في هذه المنطقة- فزوجه ابنته وأنجبت له أولادا صالحين طلبة علم.
بعد أن حج سنة 1377 هـ وافته منيته في الثامن عشر من ذي الحجة عام 1377هـ بمكة المكرمة وهو في ريعان شبابه ودفن في بلد الله الحرام رحمه الله وأسكنه فسيح جناته
له من المصنفات المطبوعة وغير المطبوعة ما يزيد على خمسة عشر كتابا, وقد صنف هذه الكتب مع قيامه بالتدريس ومراقبته للمدارس الأخرى, وآخر وظيفة شغلها هي: إدارة المعهد العلمي بسامطة.
