It was narrated that Ibraheem an-Nakha'i was walking and met al-'Amash on the way, so they started walking together. [Both were from the major scholars of the Salaf. Al-'Amash - meaning the bleary-eyed, had a defect in his eye and couldn’t see well, and an-Nakha'i was one-eyed.
Al-'Amash said:
Ibraheem, if people see us together, they would say: Look! The bleary-eyed and the one-eyed together!
An-Nakha'i said:
And what would it harm you if they acquire sin and we acquire reward.
Al-'Amash responded:
And what would it harm you if they are safe [from sin] and we are safe [from their tongues].
[i.e. split and save them from sinning and save ourselves from their tongues.]
