The Virtue of Laylat al-Qadr

Laylat al-Qadr is the best night of the year and the most tremendous in regards to significance and it is a blessed night. 

“We sent it (this Qur'an) down on a blessed night.” (44:3)

Also it is a tremendous night in regards to its Qadr.

“Verily! We have sent it (this Qur'an) down in the night of Al-Qadr (Decree)” (97:1) 

From what is said, it is named Laylat al-Qadr because of its tremendous virtue. And it is said it has another meaning, it is said Laylat al-Qadr because in it is decreed what will happen to the slave till the next Laylat al-Qadr.

As Allāh said in Sūrat al-Dukhān:

“Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments.” (44:4)

So it is a tremendous night in regards to its Qadr.

And all of the night is Salām till the appearance of Fajr, safe from evil and filled with goodness.

The angels descend and the Rūḥ (Jibrīl).

Descending carrying goodness and blessings for the slaves. 

It is the best night and the most tremendous in regards to significance and its lofty rank.

And from its tremendous virtues and loftiness and tremendous rewards is what Allāh mentions in His saying, “It’s better than a thousand months.”

Meaning; that the deeds in this night, Laylat al Qadr, is better than the deeds in a thousand months that doesn’t include Laylat al –Qadr. And a thousand months calculated into years is more than eighty years. Meaning the age of a man who has lived a long life exceeding eighty years. 

Look at the reward that can be attained in one night.

A man who has lived a long life, look at the people of old age, specifically the people of worship and obedience. 

“The best of you are those whose life is long and his deeds are good.”

Look at the bounty of Allāh and how tremendous it is, and the favor of Allah and how abundant it is, and His reward and how great it is. 

All the bounty is in the Hand of Allah; He grants to whom He wills. And Allah is the Owner of Great Bounty.

One night is better than a thousand months, better than a thousand months not including in it Laylat al- Qadr better than eighty years calculating it by years.

Eighty years is the age of a man who has lived a long life. Whoever lives for more than eighty years then he has lived a long life, old in age, look at this tremendous reward. 

Due to this it’s upon the Muslim to be extra diligent in seizing this night and to increase his efforts.

The Prophet (ﷺ) commanded us and encouraged us to seek it during the last 10 nights of Ramadhān. 

And from his guidance was that when he entered the last ten nights he would tighten his lower garment stay up at night and wake his family up also motivating his family and children in seizing and attaining its tremendous blessings.

And the calamities during these times is that the people, especially the youth, the doors of Fitan have been open for them, especially during the nights of Ramadhān that which distances or causes them to be distant them from these blessed nights and from attaining these blessings.

And this, by Allāh, is a tremendous calamity that this blessed and tremendous season passes by the Muslim that which includes this blessed and tremendous night and he misses out on it.

If the people looked at this matter through a worldly perspective, if it was said to one of the people whose monthly salary was a thousand riyal for example, if it was said to him, increase your efforts a little bit and your salary will be 100,000 no 1,000,000, he will continue to work night and day and he will increase his efforts because he will feel and realize the greatness of that which he will attain from this short-lived enjoyment.

And the trade of the Akhirah is a more tremendous affair. 

Shall I direct you to a trade that will save you from a great punishment?  

Verily, those who recite the Book of Allah (this Qur'an), and perform As-Ṣalāt (Iqāmat-as-Ṣalāt), and spend (in charity) out of what We have provided for them, secretly and openly, hope for a (sure) trade-gain that will never perish. (35:25)

It doesn’t have a recession or a loss. It’s pure profit. Laylat al-Qadr is the most tremendous season for profit.

And the attainment of trade is increased. In it you get the profit of a deed that is worth more than eighty years.

This is a tremendous profit. 

Due to this the believer praises Allāh that he reached Ramadhān and he makes from his goals and his main concern that he seizes these blessings and from the most tremendous is the seizing of Laylat al-Qadr. 

And here I want to inform you of an important matter. 

If you wish to seize Laylat al-Qadr, then enter from the beginning of the month accordingly by gaining nearness to Allah (ﷻ) and preserving the acts of worship because the good deed invites its sister. 

“Is there any reward for good other than good?” (55:60) 

So perfect this seizing from its beginning. 

Allah will bestow upon you goodness and blessings and from that is the goodness of Laylat al-Qadr and its blessings.

Meanwhile some of the people miss out on all of this goodness then they come one night of the month, the 27^th thinking that its Laylat al-Qadr.

One year a person said to his friend pray Ṣalāt al–‘Isha with me. When they finished praying and were getting ready for Tarāwīh he turned to him and said, “Is it the night of the 27^th ?” He said, “No.” So he got up and left, and he was his friend. 

So the one who wants to seize Laylat al-Qadr then let him start from the beginning of the month with deeds and obedience with worship and du'ā increase in goodness and don’t enter the 20 nights except that his soul is trained upon worship and remembrance, and tranquility and prepared for the booty of the last 10 blessed nights, with Laylat al-Qadr. 

And the soul needs this, so the person begins from the first night of Ramadhān with good deeds and seriousness and increased efforts with the remembrance of Allāh and recitation of the Qur'ān and Qiyām Layl and other acts of worship attaining nearness to Allah (ﷻ).
