5 Instances the Arabic Language Oppressed Women

It is said that the Arabic language oppressed women in five instances:

1. If a man is alive, it is said that he is ‘Hayy’ – alive.

   If a woman is alive, it is said that she is ‘Hayyah’ – a snake.

2. If a man is correct in something that he says, it is said he is ‘Museeb’ – correct.

   If a woman is correct in something that she says, it is said she is ‘Museebah’ – a calamity.

3. If a man assumes the position of a judge, it is said he is a ‘Qadee’ – a judge.

   If a woman assumes the position of a judge, it is said she is a ‘Qaadiyyah’ – an Annihilator.

4. If a man assumes a position of being a deputy in a certain field, he is called a 'Naa-ib' – Deputy.

   If a woman assumes the same position she is called a 'Naa-ibah' a synonym for calamity.

5. If a man has a hobby, it is said that he is 'Hawee' – one with a hobby.

   If a woman has a hobby, it is said that she is 'Hawiyah' – one of the names of the Hellfire.

The general rule that a masculine word is converted to a feminine word by adding a 'Taa Marbootah' at the end of it, such as; Muslim (masculine) – Muslimah (feminie), Fajir (masculine) – Fajirah (feminie), 'Aabid (masculine) – 'Aabidah (feminie) etc is not always applied and the writer has exploited this rule for humor.
