Rubbing a Childs Head

On the authority of ‘Ubadah ibn al Waleed ibn as Saamit who said: “I went out with my father when I was a child, we ran run into a Shaykh (old man) who wore a Burdah^[1] and a Yemeni Thawb, his son likewise wore a Burdah and Yemeni Thawb.

I said to him: ’O Uncle, why don’t you give your son this striped garment and you take the Burdah. So you would be wearing two Burdahs and he would be wearing the stripped garment.’

So he turned to my father and said: ‘Is this your son?’

My father said yes.

He (the old man) then rubbed my head and said: ‘May Allah bless you, I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of Allah - صلى الله عليه وسلم - saying:

“Feed them from what you eat and clothe them from what you clothe yourselves.”

I [later] asked my father: ‘O father, who was that man?’

He said: Abul Yusr, Ka’b ibn ‘Amr.

On the authority of Yusuf ibn ‘Abdullah ibn Salam who said:

“The Messenger of Allah - صلى الله عليه وسلم - named me Yusuf, he sat me on his lap and rubbed my head.”

On the authority of ‘Amr ibn Hareeth who said:

“My mother took me to the Prophet - صلى الله عليه وسلم, he rubbed my head and supplicated for provision for me.”

[Saheeh al Adab al Mufrad 1/243]

On the authority of Muhammad ibn Haatib who said: When my mother came from al Habashah (Ethiopia) after my father Haatib had died, she brought me to the Prophet - صلى الله عليه وسلم - as one of my hands had burns. She said:

‘O Messenger of Allah, this is Muhammad ibn Haatib the the son of your brother. He has suffered these burns.’

Muhammad ibn Haatib said: ‘I do not lie upon the Messenger of Allah - صلى الله عليه وسلم -, so I do not remember, did he blow on to or rub my head, and he supplicated for blessings for me and my offspring.”

Handhalah stated: I was taken to the Prophet - صلى الله عليه وسلم, [My father] said to him: ‘I have sons, some of whom have beards and others who are younger, and this is the youngest of them, can you supplicate for him. He rubbed his head and said: ‘May Allah bless you.’ or ‘May he be blessed.’

Dhayaal stated: ‘Indeed I would see Handhalah; a man with a swollen face, or an animal with swollen udder would be brought to him, he would blow on his hands and say; ‘In the name of Allah’ and place his hand on their heads and say; ‘in the same place where the Prophet placed his palm’ and wipe over it.

Dhayaal stated: ‘The swelling would go.’

On the authority of Zahrah ibn Ma’bad who narrated on the authority of his grandfather ‘Abdullah ibn Hishaam:

He met the Prophet - صلى الله عليه وسلم - when his mother, Zaynab bint Hameed, took him to the Messenger of Allah - صلى الله عليه وسلم -. She said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, allow him to pledge allegiance to you.’

He said: ‘He is young.’ So he rubbed his head and supplicated for him.’

It was also narrated by Zahrah that his grandfather ‘Abdullah ibn Hishaam used to take him out to the market to buy food, Ibn ‘Umar and Ibnuz Zubayr – may Allah be pleased with them both - used to meet him and say; ‘allow us to be partners with you, for indeed the Prophet - صلى الله عليه وسلم - supplicated for blessings for you. so he would become a partner with them and sometimes he would buy a whole caravan and gain its full potential in profit and send it home.

On the authority of J’ad ibn ‘AbdurRahman who said: I heard as Saa-ib ibn Yazeed saying: “My maternal aunt took me to the Messenger of Allah - صلى الله عليه وسلم - and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, my nephew is in pain.’ So he rubbed my head and supplicated for blessings for me. He then performed ablution and I drank from it and climbed on his back, I saw the seal of the prophets between his shoulders as if it were a button.

On the authority of Salamah ibn Wardaan who said:

“I saw Malik shaking people’s hands, he asked me: ‘Who are you?’

I said: ‘I am a servant for Bani Layth.’

He rubbed my head three times and said: ‘May Allah bless you.’
