So it includes these three affairs; the Iqrar with the heart, speech with the tongue and actions with the body parts. So if this is the case, then surely it would increase and decrease. This is because the Iqrar with the heart differs from person to person. To have knowledge about something by way of someone telling it to you is not the same as seeing it for yourself. Also, to have knowledge about something by way of one person telling it to you is not the same as knowing it if two people told it to you, and so on.
This is why Ibraheem - ﷺ - said:
And (remember) when Ibraheem said:
My lord show me how you give life to the dead?He (Allah) said:
Do you not believe?Ibraheem said:
Yes (I believe) but to be stronger in conviction.Al-Baqarah: 260
So indeed Iman increases in regards to the conviction of the heart, its tranquility and its serenity. One notices this in himself, for when someone sits in a gathering that consists of the remembrance of Allah, and a sermon is being delivered mentioning paradise and the hellfire, his Iman will increase to the point where that person feels as if he can see them with his own eyes. At other times when that person is heedless (of them) and is not in such a gathering, that conviction that he had would decrease in strength in his heart.
Iman increases with regards to speech as well. For indeed, the one who mentions Allah ten times (a day) is not like the one who mentions Allah a hundred times, the second one increases (in Iman) by a lot.
Also the one who practices ‘Ibadah (worship) in the most perfect manner, his Iman will increase more than the one who practices in a deficient manner.
Likewise knowledge, for indeed if a person practices more good deeds than another, then his Iman will increase more than the other person.
The Quran and the Sunnah establish the increase and decrease of Iman, Allah the Mighty and Majestic says:
And We have not set except angels as guardians of the fire. And We have fixed their number (19) only as a trial for the disbelievers, in order that the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) may reach certainty [that this Quran is the truth - as it is in conformity with their books regarding the number [19] which is also written in their books] and that the believers may increase in faith.Al-Muddathir: 31
He also says:
And Whenever there comes down a Surah, some of them (hypocrites) say: “Whom from amongst you has had his faith increased by it?” As for those who believe, it has increased their faith and they rejoice. But as for those in whose hearts is a disease (of doubt, disbelief and hypocrisy), it will only add suspicion and doubt to their suspicion, disbelief and doubt: and they die while they are disbelievers.At-Tawbah: 134

فإن الإيمان عند أهل السنة والجماعة هو
فهو يتضمن هذه الأمور الثلاثة، إقرار بالقلب، ونطق باللسان، وعمل بالجوارح، وإذا كان كذلك، فإنه سوف يزيد وينقص، وذلك لأن الإقرار بالقلب يتفاضل، فليس الإقرار بالخبر كالإقرار بالمعاينة، وليس الإقرار بخبر الرجل كالإقرار بخبر الرجلين، وهكذا.
ولهذا قال إبراهيم عليه الصلاة والسلام:
وَإِذْ قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ
رَبِّ أَرِنِي كَيْفَ تُحْيِي الْمَوْتَىقَالَ أَوَلَمْ تُؤْمِنْقَالَ بَلَى وَلَكِنْ لِيَطْمَئِنَّ قَلْبِيالبقرة: 260
فالإيمان يزيد من حيث الإقرار إقرار القلب وطمأنينته وسكونه، والإنسان يجد ذلك من نفسه، فعندما يحضر مجلس ذكر، فيه موعظة وذكر للجنة والنار، يزداد إيماناً حتى كأنه يشاهد ذلك رأي عين، وعندما تكون الغفلة، ويقوم من هذا المجلس، يخف هذا اليقين في قلبه.
كذلك يزداد الإيمان من حيث القول، فإن من ذكر الله عز وجل عشر مرات، ليس كمن ذكر الله مائة مرة، فالثاني أزيد بكثير.
وكذلك أيضاً من أتى بالعبادة على وجه كامل، يكون إيمانه أزيد ممن أتى بها على وجه ناقص، وكذلك العمل، فإن الإنسان إذا عمل عملاً بجوارحه أكثر من الآخر، صار الثاني أزيد إيماناً من الناقص، وقد جاء ذلك في الكتاب والسنة، أعني إثبات الزيادة والنقصان جاء في الكتاب والسنة، قال الله تبارك وتعالى:
وَمَا جَعَلْنَا أَصْحَابَ النَّارِ إِلَّا مَلائِكَةً وَمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ إِلَّا فِتْنَةً لِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ وَيَزْدَادَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِيمَاناً المدثر: 31
وقال الله تعالى:
وَإِذَا مَا أُنْزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ فَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ يَقُولُ أَيُّكُمْ زَادَتْهُ هَذِهِ إِيمَاناً فَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا فَزَادَتْهُمْ إِيمَاناً وَهُمْ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ وَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ مَرَضٌ فَزَادَتْهُمْ رِجْساً إِلَى رِجْسِهِمْ وَمَاتُوا وَهُمْ كَافِرُونَ التوبة: 124-125
