In the name of Allāh the Most Beneficent and the Most Merciful., all praise is due to Allāh, Lord of all that exists. And I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allāh alone without any partners. And I bear witness that Muhammad is His Slave and Messenger (ﷺ) his family and all his companions.
Oh Allāh, teach us that which will benefit us, and benefit us with what You have taught us, and increase us in knowledge, and rectify all of our affairs, and don’t leave us to our own for even a blink of an eye.
As to what proceeds…
We listened to these blessed Ayāt from the beginning of Sūrah al-Naḥl. This Sūrah is known by the people of knowledge as the “Sūrah of blessings” due to what Allāh enumerates from His many blessings upon His slaves and His favors and His (ﷻ) bounties. He (ﷻ) began with the greatest blessing and the biggest favor and that is the Tawhīd of Allāh and making the religion sincerely for Him (ﷻ). This is the biggest and the greatest blessing. He (ﷻ) said,
“The Event (the Hour or the punishment of disbelievers and polytheists or the Islamic laws or commandments), ordained by Allah will come to pass, so seek not to hasten it. Glorified and Exalted be He above all that they associate as partners with Him. He sends down the angels with inspiration of His Command to whom of His slaves He pleases (saying): "Warn mankind that La ilāha illa Ana (none has the right to be worshipped but I), so fear Me (by abstaining from sins and evil deeds). (16:1,2)
This is the greatest blessing, the blessing of Tawhīd. Due to this one of the Salaf said and I believe it is Sufyān ibn ‘Uyaynah, “There is no blessing of Allāh upon His slaves greater than informing them that Lā ilāha illa Allāh.”
This is the greatest blessing. Due to this the Sūrah of blessings, Sūrah al-Naḥl begins with this blessing.
And when the slave is aware of the blessings of Allāh upon him, Allah (ﷻ) said in the same Sūrah,
“And whatever of blessings and good things you have, it is from Allah. (16:53)
So let the slave be aware at the same time that the greatest and loftiest blessing is the blessing of Tawhīd, the blessing of Lā ilāha illa Allāh. Verily the success of Allāh (ﷻ) for His slave is that he is from the people of this tremendous and blessed statement, actualizing it, establishing it, and acting with what it necessitates. This is the greatest blessing and the loftiest favor. Due to this the affair is emphasized, the affair of Tawhīd, throughout this Sūrah, in different places, several times, in various instances showing the blessing that Allāh (ﷻ) favors His slave with and that it necessitates the Tawhīd of Allāh (ﷻ) and making the religion sincerely for Him. And from this is the saying of Allāh in this Sūrah,
“And Allah said (O mankind!): "Take not ilahain (two gods in worship, etc.). Verily, He (Allah) is (the) only One Ilah (God). Then, fear Me (Allah) much [and Me (Alone), i.e. be away from all kinds of sins and evil deeds that Allah has forbidden and do all that Allah has ordained and worship none but Allah] .To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and (all that is in) the earth and Ad-Din Wasiba is His [(i.e. perpetual sincere obedience to Allah is obligatory). None has the right to be worshipped but Allah)]. Will you then fear any other than Allah? And whatever of blessings and good things you have, it is from Allah (16:51-53)
In other words, the blessings of Allāh upon you and His (ﷻ) favors necessitates His Tawhīd and making the religion sincerely for Him (ﷻ).
In the conclusion, Allāh (ﷻ) enumerates the various blessings in this tremendous Sūrah, He (ﷻ) says,
“Thus does He perfect His Grace unto you, that you may submit yourselves to His Will (in Islam).” (16:81)
Meaning, this is what is intended. And from the last blessings that Allāh (ﷻ) mentions is the blessings of the homes and the different types of homes Allāh (ﷻ) has prepared for his slaves and has subjected it for them. And he said at the end of it,
“Thus does He perfect His Grace unto you, that you may submit yourselves to His Will (in Islam).” (16:81)
Due to this it is known that the purpose of these subjugations of these various blessings, the blessing of wealth, the blessing of accommodation, the blessing of food, the blessing of transportation and other than that from the blessings of Allāh (ﷻ) upon His slaves, the purpose of it and the objective is to submit to Allah and Tawhīd and surrendering to Him with obedience.
“So that you may submit yourselves to His Will (in Islam). Then, if they turn away, your duty (O Muhammad (ﷺ)) is only to convey (the Message) in a clear way. They recognize the Grace of Allah, yet they deny it (by worshipping others besides Allah) and most of them are disbelievers (deny the Prophethood of Muhammad). (16:81-83)
And His saying (ﷻ), “They recognize the Grace of Allah, yet they deny it (by worshipping others besides Allah) and most of them are disbelievers (deny the Prophethood of Muhammad). (16:83)
Shaykh Muhammad ibn Abdul-Wahhab titled one of the chapters in his tremendous book “Kitāb al-Tawhīd” “Chapter: The Saying of Allāh (ﷻ) They recognize the Grace of Allah, yet they deny it.”
Because many of the people are immersed in blessings and countless favors and forget the Most Generous (ﷻ) and they ascribe the blessing to what Allāh made as a means to bring it about and sometimes in what Allāh didn’t make as a means to bring it about.
Due to this the scholars (May Allāh have mercy on them) mention in their tafsīr of the Ayah different wordings under the generality of His saying, “They recognize the Grace of Allah, yet they deny it.” Like the saying of some of them, “The wind was good and the captain was skilled.” when they arrive safely, they say, “The wind was good and the captain was skilled. (captain of the ship).” They forget that their success and safety from destruction is only from the bounty and favor of Allāh (ﷻ) upon them.
It was obligatory upon them in this circumstance and in every circumstance to remember the blessing of Allāh by saying, “This is Allāh’s favor, or this is from the favor of my Lord, or we praise Allāh for His favor and His facilitation.”
Similar to that is the saying when one attains, for example, something in business or a profit or something similar, he says, “This is because of my proficiency, or this is from my cleverness, or my merit, or my experience, or my skills, or my good understanding.” So he forgets the blessing of Allāh upon him that he granted him success in regards to earnings and that he paved the way for him profits and he ascribes the blessing to other than the Most Generous.
All of this falls under His (ﷻ) saying, “They recognize the Grace of Allah, yet they deny it.” Due to this, it is upon the Muslim to always remember the blessing of Allāh upon him, praising his Lord, extoling his Guardian,
“My Lord! Inspire and bestow upon me the power and ability that I may be grateful for Your Favors which You have bestowed on me and on my parents.” (27:19)
He asks his Lord to aid him and to inspire him and to guide him and to grant him success because he is grateful for Allāh’s (ﷻ) blessing upon him.
In summary, this blessed and tremendous Sūrah, Sūrah al-Naḥl, also known as the Sūrah of blessings as we mentioned, because of what is enumerated in it from Allāh’s signs and many blessings upon the slaves. It is also known as Sūrah al-Naḥl because the bee is mentioned and it is from the tremendous signs of Allāh (ﷻ) that necessitates from the intelligent slave to contemplate upon these tremendous signs and what Allāh (ﷻ) has made in it from the marvelous affairs showing the perfection of the Creator and the magnificence of the Most Generous (ﷻ).
Due to this, He (ﷻ) concludes in what relates to this verse, by His saying, “Verily, in this is indeed a sign for people who think. (16:69)
This is from one of the doors of contemplation in regards to His signs and blessings and His (ﷻ) favors.
So we ask Allāh (ﷻ) to inspire us all to be grateful for the blessings and to make us from the grateful slaves. O Allāh, make us from those in remembrance of You, those that are grateful to You, those that return to You, and that are humble to You.
O Allāh accept our repentance and forgive wash our sins and make firm our evidence, and guide our hearts and make our tongues upright and remove the rancor from our chests. O Allāh, give our souls Taqwa and purify it, You are the best of those that purify, You are it’s protector and it’s guardian.
O Allāh, forgive us, our parents, our scholars, our leaders, the Muslims, the believers, the ones that are alive, and the ones who have passed away. O Allāh, apportion for us such fear that should serve as a barrier between us and acts of disobedience; and such obedience that will take us to Your Paradise; and such certainty that will make easy for us to bear in the calamities of this world.
O Allāh! let us enjoy our hearing, our sight and our power as long as You keep us alive and make our heirs from our own offspring, and make our revenge restricted to those who oppress us, and support us against those who are hostile to us let no tribulation afflict our Religion; let not worldly affairs be our main concern, or the limit of our knowledge, and let not those rule over us who do not show mercy to us!
O Allāh, You are free from every imperfection and praise be to You. I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance. O Allāh send Ṣalāt and Salām upon your slave and messenger, our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.
