On the authority of Abu Hurayrah - may Allah be pleased with him - the Messenger of Allah - صلى الله عليه وسلم - said:
Indeed the most difficult prayers for hypocrites are the ‘Isha and Fajr prayers, and if they knew of their virtue, they would attend them even if they had to crawl. I wanted to order for the prayer to be established, then order someone to lead the prayer, then go with a few men carrying firewood to the homes of those who do not attend the congregation and burn down their homes.Collected by Bukhari and Muslim
Amongst the benefits of the Hadeeth:
There are two categories of hypocrisy:
Firstly: Minor Hypocrisy; also known as Action Hypocrisy (the hypocrisy related to actions). It is that a person is a believer from within, but acts with some of the actions of hypocrites, such as slightly showing off with actions, lying, treachery, betrayal and transgression during disputes.
This type of hypocrisy does not remove one from Islam, nor does it necessitate an eternity in the Hellfire. It does not nullify all the actions of a person, Riyaa (Showing off) only nullifies the actions that it mixes with, and a person who shows off with their good deeds is in grave danger, and it is upon this person to repent to Allah and forsake the actions of the hypocrites.
Secondly: Major Hypocrisy; that a person conceals disbelief from within and outwardly displays faith/Islam. From within, this person is a Jew, a Christian, an idolator or an atheist (for example), but outwardly displays Islam and proclaims to be a Muslim, and even joins the Muslims in some of their acts of worship. This type of hypocrisy removes a person from Islam, necessitates an eternity in the Hellfire, as well as nullifies all the actions of the person in question. These will have the most severe punishment on the day of resurrection; Allah the Elevated said:
Indeed, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire
One of the signs of a hypocrite is not attending the congregational prayer, especially the Fajr and the ‘Isha prayers. So it is an obligation upon the Muslim to maintain the prayer in congregation, and strive against himself so as not to miss the prayer, and to overcome the desire of sleep and comfort, and prefer the reward that is with Allah the Majestic over it. It is upon him to take all the necessary arrangements that would aid him in attending the congregation; such as setting an alarm clock, sleeping early, and not staying up late without a legislated benefit, and Allah is the granter of success.
In this Hadeeth is evidence for the obligation of praying in congregation, in that he informed us that not attending it was a sign of a hypocrite, and that he wanted to burn the homes of those who didn’t attend it. And in a narration that has some weakness in its chain, the Prophet - صلى الله عليه وسلم - didn’t burn down their homes because of the women and children in them who are not obligated to pray in congregation and therefore have no sin upon them…

عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه قال : قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم:
إن أثقل صلاة على المنافقين صلاة العشاء وصلاة الفجر، ولو يعلمون ما فيهما لأتوهما ولو حبواً، ولقد هممت أن آمر بالصلاة فتقام ثم آمر رجلاً فيصلي بالناس، ثم أنطلق معي برجال معهم حزم من حطب إلى قوم لا يشهدون الصلاة فأحرق عليهم بيوتهم بالناررواه البخاري ومسلم .
من فوائد الحديث:
1- النفاق ينقسم إلى قسمين :
الأول : النفاق الأصغر، ويسمى النفاق العملي وهو أن يكون مؤمناً في الباطن ولكنه يعمل بعض أعمال المنافقين، كالرياء اليسير، والكذب والخيانة والغدر والفجور في الخصومات. وهذا النوع لا يخرج من الإسلام، ولا يوجب لصاحبه الخلود في النار، ولا يحبط أعمال العبد وإنما يحبط الرياء ما خالطه من العمل، و صاحبه على خطر عظيم، وعليه أن يتوب إلى الله ويقلع عن أعمال المنافقين.
الثاني : النفاق الأكبر، وهو أن يبطن الكفر ويظهر الإسلام، فهو في الباطن يهودي أو نصراني، أو وثني أو ملحد ولكنه يظهر الإسلام فيزعم أنه مسلم ويشارك المسلمين في بعض عباداتهم، وهذا النوع من النفاق مخرج من الملة، ويوجب لصاحبه الخلود في النار، ويحبط جميع أعمال العبد، وأصحابه أشد الناس عذاباً يوم القيامة قال تعالى :
إن المنافقين في الدرك الأسفل من النار
2- من علامات المنافقين التخلف عن صلاة الجماعة لا سيما صلاة الفجر وصلاة العشاء، فالواجب على المسلم أن يحافظ على صلاة الجماعة وأن يجاهد نفسه على عدم التخلف عنها، وأن يغالب شهوة النوم والراحة وأن يؤثر ما عند الله تعالى، وعليه أن يبذل الأسباب المعينة له على حضور الجماعة من اتخاذ المنبه، والنوم المبكر وترك السهر في غير مصلحة شرعية والله الموفق.
3- في هذا الحديث دليل على وجوب صلاة الجماعة حيث أخبر أن التخلف عنها من سمات المنافقين، وحيث هم بإحراق بيوت الذين يتخلفون عن الجماعة. وفي رواية في سندها ضعف أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ترك تحريق بيوتهم لما فيها من النساء والذرية وهم ليسوا من أهل صلاة الجماعة فلا ذنب لهم…
