The Deliberate Alteration of the Bible

The statement of Allah the Mighty and Majestic:

{ They alter the meanings of the words from their correct understanding and have forgotten a good part of the message that was sent to them [Al Ma-idah: 13]

Ibn Katheer comments:

{ They alter the meanings of the words from their correct understanding Meaning their understanding of it became corrupt, and their conduct towards the verses of Allah became evil. They understood His book in a manner contrary to what was revealed, they gave it meanings that it did not support, and they added words that weren’t initially in it, we seek refuge with Allah from that. {…and have forgotten a good part of the Message that was sent to them They have forsaken acting upon it, becoming uninterested it.

Al Hasan stated: “They stripped themselves from their religion and the religious duties that were ordained upon them by Allah, duties that their actions would not be accepted without.”

Others stated: They forsook acting upon their religion, so their state became lowly; they do not have sound hearts, upright morals or upright acts [of worship].

Al Baghawi comments:

It is their alteration of the description of the final prophet - صلى الله عليه وسلم . It was also said it is their alteration of the words to harbor evil meanings. {…and have forgotten a good part of the Message that was sent to them meaning they forsook their portion of what they were ordered to do, such as believing in Muhammad - صلى الله عليه وسلم - and describing his characteristics to the people.

As Sa’di comments:

They were afflicted with altering and changing it, they altered the meanings of what Allah intended to something that was not intended by Allah nor His messenger.

They { have forgotten a good part of the Message that was sent to them , they were reminded by the Tawraat [Torah], and what Allah revealed to Musa [Moses], but they forgot a portion of it. This forgetfulness includes forgetting the knowledge it contained, they forgot it and it was lost from them. A lot of the knowledge that Allah made them forget can no longer be found as a punishment for them.

This also includes forgetting acting upon it, which means they have forsaken acting upon it. So they were not granted success to establish what they were ordered to establish. This is used as evidence when the People of the Book deny some of the things that are present in their book, or happened during their time; indeed it is from what they have forgotten.
