The saying of Allah:
Had We intended to take a pastime (i.e. a wife or a son), We could surely have taken it from Us, if We were going to do (that). Nay, We fling the truth against falsehood, so it destroys it, and behold, it (falsehood) vanishes. And woe to you for that which you attribute. To Him belongs whosoever is in the heavens and on earth. And those who are near Him are not too proud to worship Him, nor are they weary (of His worship). [Al Anbiyaa: 17-19]
Al Baghawee comments:
The meaning of the Ayah, is that when they made their claim about the Messiah and his mother, Allah rebutted them saying: { We could surely have taken it from Us …because you know that a man’s child and wife are with him, not with others.
{…if We were going to do that Qataadah and ibn Jurayj stated that this is a negation, meaning We do not do so. Others stated that it is a condition, meaning if We were of those to take a child, We would have taken one from Our self [i.e. not from mankind, as ‘Isa was human], but We would not do so because it is not befitting of a God.
{Nay… Meaning turn away from what they claim because it is lies and falsehood.
{We fling the truth against falsehood, and so it destroys it, and behold, it vanishes. Meaning we would falsify their lies by clarifying the truth so that it may wither away and disappear. Allah then threatens them for their lies saying: { And woe to you for that which you attribute to Allah with what is not befitting of Him, claiming He has a wife and a child. { To Him belongs whosoever is in the heavens and on earth They are all servants and owned by him { And those who are near Him,. meaning the angels { are not too proud to worship Him nor are they weary (of His worship).
Ibn Katheer comments:
This is similar to the Allah’s saying:
Had Allah willed to take a son (or offspring), He could have chosen whom He willed out of those whom He created. But Glorified is He! [Az-Zumar: 4]
He glorified himself from taking a son, not to mention their lies and falsehood, claiming that ‘Isa or ‘Uzayr or the angles are the children of Allah { Glorified and Exalted is He High above (the great falsehood) that they claim!
Compiled from Tafseer al Bahgawee and Tafseer ibn Katheer.

[Translator's note:] Think about it; if God were to take a son, that son would be divine, God like, magnificent, all powerful, all knowledgeable, mighty, ever-living, majestic etc. He wouldn't be a mere human like us who eats, sleeps, bleeds, relieves himself, tires etc. He would share the attributes of his father, as your children share the attributes of their parents. Glorified is Allah from what the ignorant ascribe to Him.
