The book was authored on the topic of penning down knowledge; when and how it started. The book also speaks about the wisdom behind writing knowledge and the issue of its permissibility or impermissibility.
The book consists of 316 narrations with their chains, some of which are on the authority of the Messenger of Allah – صلى الله عليه و سلم - and others which are not. The author, may Allah have mercy upon him, categorized the narrations into a number of topics, all of which can be categorized into four main categories:
The first category: Narrations that support the impermissibilty of writing knowledge, he starts off with the Ahadeeth, then the narrations by the Sahabah, then the Tabi’een, then those who came after them.
The second category: The reasons behind the narrations of the impermissibility of writing knowledge.
The third category: The narrations that support the permissibility of writing knowledge – in the same order mentioned in the first category.
The fourth category: The virtue of books and what was said concerning collecting and borrowing them.
In the first two categories the author simply lists the narrations without commenting. In the latter to categories, the author adds his beneficial commentary, or reconciles between narrations that may outwardly seem contradictory.
The author also collects all the chains of one narration, no matter how many they are.
