‘My Lord I am Overcome’

Allaah the Elevated states: Before your people, O Muhammad, { The people of Nooh (Noah) denied (their Messenger)…} Meaning they outwardly proclaimed their denial of the message and accused him of being mad; { and [they] said: ‘A madman!’ and he was insolently rebuked and threatened.}

Mujaahid stated: It means they accused him of spreading madness. It was also stated that it means that they scolded, reprimanded and threatened him {If you do not cease O Nooh, you will surely be amongst the stoned} [Ash Shu’araa: 16]. Ibn Zayd stated: This is a good commentary.

{He then invoked his Lord (saying): "I have been overcome, so support (me)!"} Meaning I am weak against them and in resisting them, so You {support} your religion.

Nooh called on his Lord saying {"I have been overcome”}. I have no ability to overcome them, because only a rare few from amongst them have believed in me, and they are not able to withstand them. So grant {support} O Allaah for me against them, and he said in another Ayah {My Lord, Leave not one of the disbelievers on the earth!}

So Allaah responded to his call, and granted support for him against his people, Allaah stated: {So We opened the gates of the skies with water pouring forth.} As Sadee stated: a great amount. Ibn Jurayj stated on the authority of ibn ‘Abbaas; the skies did not rain before or after that day, not even from clouds, so the doors of the skies were opened with water without clouds. {And We caused springs to gush forth from the earth.} Meaning all regions of the earth will gush forth with ongoing water, even volcanoes which are the places of fire, We will gush forth springs from them. So the skies gushed forth with an immense amount of water, something extraordinary, and the whole earth gushed forth, even volcanoes which do not carry water, let alone spring forth water.

{So the waters met} meaning from the skies and the earth {for a predestined affair}, meaning an affair that has been pre decreed.

{And we carried him} meaning Nooh {on planks and nails} meaning a ship made of planks, He mentioned the description and not the noun. What is meant by planks are broad wooden boards, {and nails} meaning the nails that hold the planks together.

{Floating under Our Eyes, a reward for him who had been rejected! And indeed, We have left this as a sign.}

Allaah allowed its craftsmanship and its type to remain amongst the people, which demonstrates His mercy over His creation, His concern for them, the full extent of His ability, His ability of creation without prior example {Then is there any that will remember (or receive admonition)?}

أَنِّي مَغْلُوبٌ

يقول تعالى: كَذَّبَتْ قبل قومك يا محمد قَوْمُ نُوحٍ فَكَذَّبُوا عَبْدَنَا أي: صرحوا له بالتكذيب واتهموه بالجنون، وَقَالُوا مَجْنُونٌ وَازْدُجِرَ قال مجاهد: وَازْدُجِرَ أي: استطير جنونا. وقيل: وَازْدُجِرَ أي: انتهروه وزجروه وأوعدوه: لَئِنْ لَمْ تَنْتَهِ يَا نُوحُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْمَرْجُومِينَ [ الشعراء : 116 ]. قاله ابن زيد، وهذا متوجه حسن.

فَدَعَا رَبَّهُ أَنِّي مَغْلُوبٌ فَانْتَصِرْ أي: إني ضعيف عن هؤلاء وعن مقاومتهم فَانْتَصِرْ أنت لدينك .

دعا نوح ربه [فقال:] أَنِّي مَغْلُوبٌ لا قدرة لي على الانتصار منهم، لأنه لم يؤمن من قومه إلا القليل النادر، ولا قدرة لهم على مقاومة قومهم، فَانْتَصِرْ اللهم لي منهم، وقال في الآية الأخرى: رَبِّ لا تَذَرْ عَلَى الأرْضِ مِنَ الْكَافِرِينَ دَيَّارًا الآيات

فأجاب الله سؤاله، وانتصر له من قومه، قال تعالى: فَفَتَحْنَا أَبْوَابَ السَّمَاءِ بِمَاءٍ مُنْهَمِرٍ أي: كثير جدا متتابع

قال الله تعالى: فَفَتَحْنَا أَبْوَابَ السَّمَاءِ بِمَاءٍ مُنْهَمِرٍ . قال السدي: هو الكثير وَفَجَّرْنَا الأرْضَ عُيُونًا أي: نبعت جميعُ أرجاء الأرض، حتى التنانير التي هي محال النيران نبعت عيونا، فَالْتَقَى الْمَاءُ أي: من السماء ومن الأرض عَلَى أَمْرٍ قَدْ قُدِرَ أي: أمر مقدر.

قال ابن جُرَيْج، عن ابن عباس: فَفَتَحْنَا أَبْوَابَ السَّمَاءِ بِمَاءٍ مُنْهَمِرٍ كثير، لم تمطر السماء قبل ذلك اليوم ولا بعده، ولا من السحاب؛ فتحت أبواب السماء بالماء من غير سحاب ذلك اليوم، فالتقى الماءان على أمر قد قدر

وَفَجَّرْنَا الأرْضَ عُيُونًا فجعلت السماء ينزل منها من الماء شيء خارق للعادة، وتفجرت الأرض كلها، حتى التنور الذي لم تجر العادة بوجود الماء فيه، فضلا عن كونه منبعا للماء، لأنه موضع النار.

وَحَمَلْنَاهُ يعني: نوحًا عَلَى ذَاتِ أَلْوَاحٍ وَدُسُرٍ أي سفينة ذات ألواح، ذكر النعت وترك الاسم، أراد بالألواح خشب السفينة العريضة وَدُسُرٍ أي: المسامير التي تشد بها الألواح

ثم أبقى الله تعالى صنعتها وجنسها بين الناس ليدل ذلك على رحمته بخلقه وعنايته، وكمال قدرته، وبديع صنعته، فَهَلْ مِنْ مُدَّكِرٍ
