Amongst the Major scholars of the Tabi’een are ‘The Seven Fuqahaa – al Fuqahaa as Sab’ah’ from the people of Madeenah, they are:
- Sa’eed ibn al Musayib.
- Al Qaasim ibn Muhammad.
- ‘Urwah ibnuz Zubayr.
- Kharijah ibn Zayd.
- Abu Salamah ibn ‘Abdur Rahmaan.
- ‘Ubayd Allaah Bay’ Abdullaah ibn ‘Utbah.
- Sulaymaan ibn Yasaar.
It was narrated on the authority of al Haafidh Abu ‘Abdullaah that he said: ‘These are the seven Fuqahaa from the scholars of Hijaaz according to the majority.
It was narrated on the authority of ibn Mubaarak that he said:
‘The Fuqahaa of Madeenah, those who used to give their opinions were seven…’ and he mentioned the previous seven except that he mentioned Saalim ibn ‘Abdullaah ibn ‘umar instead of Abu Salamah ibn ‘Abdur Rahmaan.
It was also narrated on the authority of Abuz Zannaad that he named these seven, except that he mentioned Abu Bakr ibn ‘Abdur Rahmaan instead of Abu Salamah and Saalim.
The seven can be memorized with the following poem:
إذَا قِيلَ مَنْ فِي الْعِلْمِ سَبْعَةُ أَبْحُرٍ *** رِوَايَتُهُمْ لَيْسَتْ عَنْ الْعِلْمِ خَارِجَهْ
فَقُلْ هُمْ عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ عُرْوَةُ قَاسِمٌ *** سَعِيدٌ أَبُو بَكْرٍ سُلَيْمَانُ خَارِجَهْ
