قال الإمام علي بن المديني

(( لم يكن في أصحاب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم من له صحبة يذهبون مذهبه ويفتون بفتواه، ويسلكون طريقه إلا ثلاثةْْْ:

عبد الله بن مسعود

زيد بن ثابت

عبد الله بن عباس

وقال في موضع آخر:

(( لم يكن من أصحاب النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم احد له أصحاب يفتون بقوله في الفقه إلا ثلاثة : عبد الله بن مسعود ، و زيد بن ثابت ، وعبد الله بن عباس .

‘Alee al Madeenee stated:

There were none amongst the companions of the Messenger of Allaah - صلى الله عليه وسلم- whom people used to follow their Madhab /opinions, relate their verdicts and follow their way except three:

‘Abdullaah ibn Mas’ood

Zayd ibn Thaabit

‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Abbaas

He also stated:

There were none amongst the companions of the Messenger of Allaah who had companions that used to relate and act upon their verdicts except three:

‘Abdullaah ibn Mas’ood

Zayd ibn Thaabit

‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Abbaas
