Full Name: ‘Umar ibn al Khataab ibn Nufayl ibn ‘Abdul ‘Azeez ibn Rayaah ibn ‘Abdullaah ibn Qart ibn Razaah ibn ‘Adee ibn Ka’b ibn Lu’ay ibn Ghaalib al Qurashee al ‘Adawee.
Kunya: Abu Hafs – Leader of the Believers.
Mothers Name: Khanthamah bint Haashim ibn al Mugheerah ibn ‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Umar ibn Makhzoom.
He was born thirteen years after the Year of the Elephants.
Az Zubayr ibn Bakkaar said: ‘Umar was from amongst the noblest of Quraysh, he was their diplomat in the pre-Islaamic era, if there happened to be a war amongst them, they would send ‘Umar as a diplomat…and were pleased with him”
Hilaal ibn Yasaaf said: said: “’Umar embraced Islaam after forty men and eleven women.
Ibn ‘Abd al Barr said: His entrance into Islaam greatly supported the Muslims, through the supplication of the Messenger of Allaah - صلى الله عليه وسلم.
He participated in the Battle of Badr as well as all the other battles and assumed the position of Caliph after Abu Bakr.
The Muslims pledged allegiance to him after the death of Abu Bakr and he traversed upon a most excellent path. Allaah granted him numerous victories in ash Shaam, Iraq and Egypt. Scriptures were compiled and history was transcribed during his time.
The signature on his ring read: ‘Sufficient is death as a reminder. ’
He was bald, both left and right handed, quick, tall and dark skinned. This is how he was described by a number of people.
Ibn ‘Abd al Barr said: The most authentic narration concerning his description is what at Thawree narrated that…Zir ibn Hubaysh said: “ I saw ‘Umar, he was a huge brown skinned man, it is as if he was from the people of Sadoos.
A number of verses in the Qur-aan were revealed in agreement with him. The Messenger of Allaah was narrated to have said:
“If there were a Messenger after me, it would be ‘Umar.”
‘Aaishah said; the Messenger of Allaah -صلى الله عليه وسلم – said:
“There were Muhadithoon in the nations that were before you, if there were a Muhadith in this Ummah, it would be ‘Umar ibn al Khataab.”
‘Alee ibn Abee Taalib stated: “The best of people after the Messenger of Allaah -صلى الله عليه وسلم- is Abu Bakr then ‘Umar. ”
ibn Mas’ood Said: “We continued to be authoritative since ‘Umar embraced Islaam. ”
