The Condition of the People After Ramadhān
All praise is due to Allāh, Lord of all that exists.
And I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allāh alone without any partners. And I bear witness that Muhammad is His Slave and Messenger (ﷺ) and upon his family and all his companions.
We praise Allāh (ﷻ) for every bounty He has bestowed upon us in the past and in the present, in secret or in public, personal or general. We praise Him for the bounty of Islam and the bounty of Īmān, and the bounty of the Qur'ān, and the bounty of health, and the bounty of family and children, and His bounties that can’t be counted and can’t be enumerated and His favors that can’t be fathomed.
And from the bounty of Allāh upon us, noble brothers, is that He facilitated for us the completion of the blessed month of Ramadhān and He aided His believing slaves in its fasting and its standing up for the night prayer. So we ask Allāh (ﷻ) to make us from those who fasted it with faith and seeking the reward and from those who stood in its nights with faith and seeking the reward and to accept from us all our righteous deeds. A practice of the noble companions (May Allāh be pleased with them) and those that follow them perfectly was that when they met each other after Ramadhān, one of them would say to his brother, “May Allāh accept from us and you.” So we ask Allāh (ﷻ) for acceptance for all of us and to make our rewards multiplied. And Allāh is the one who says, “Fasting is for Me and I will reward for it.” And the good deed is multiplied tenfold, except for fasting, the reward of fasting is multiplied and its reward is tremendous. Allāh (ﷻ) has blessed us to witness the month of Ramadhān and He (ﷻ) facilitated whomever He facilitated in it from fasting and standing up for the night prayer and remembrance and du'ā and reciting the Qur'ān and other than that from the acts of obedience that He aided in and facilitated by His Bounty and Generosity.
And Allāh (ﷻ) mentioned the wisdom of legislating this tremendous act of worship in this blessed month is an aid to actualize the Taqwa of Allāh (ﷻ), as He (ﷻ) said,
“O you who believe! Observing the fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqun.” (2:183)
So it is upon every Muslim to be aware that the month of fasting is a school in training the soul and refining it and making it hold on to the truth and protecting it from the evil, and from the falsehood and foolishness. Fasting cultivates. It cultivates the fasting person upon mannerisms upon righteous actions and persevering upon the acts of worship. It is also a striving of the soul on avoiding sins and disobedience.
Verily, the reward of fasting is an extremely tremendous reward and a lofty act of obedience; it produces, if the slave is truthful with Allāh (ﷻ) in it, al-Iḥsān after Ramadhān. Verily from the rewards of a good deed is a good deed after it. As it is said, “The good deed invites its sister.” Due to this the scholars mentioned that from the signs of an accepted fast and standing up at night is that their condition afterwards improves after Ramadhān. If he was evil before Ramadhān he will become good after it. If he was good before Ramadhān he will become better after it. And these are from the signs of good and its indications. As for, and Allāh’s refuge is sought, if the conditions of the person worsens after Ramadhān and finds in himself inclining towards disobedience, and Allāh’s refuge is sought, and sins and upon negligence in the acts of obedience and the obligatory acts, then these are not from the signs of good. So from the goodness of the slave is that his soul strives upon al-Iḥsān after Ramadhān. One of the Salaf said, “Wretched are a people who don’t know Allāh except in Ramadhān,” And this is the case with some people! You see him in Ramadhān persevering upon the obligatory acts and taking great care of it. And due to this, SubḥānAllāh, in a number of the neighborhoods an individual is amazed by the amount of people praying in the Masājid, it is as if they weren’t in the neighborhood except in Ramadhān despite them being there in other than Ramadhān, however they are not seen and they don’t attend the Ṣalāt, meanwhile in Ramadhān they are active in attending it, being present for it, and performing it in the Masājid. The Lord of Ramadhān is the Lord of all the other months. And the One worshipped in Ramadhān is the One worshipped in all the other months. And the obligatory acts in Ramadhān are the obligatory acts in other than it. And the prohibitions in Ramadhān are the prohibitions in other than it. And the examples of those don’t achieve the desired benefits from the month of fasting. So in reality from the tremendous losses is that the individual misses out in the masjid after Ramadhān and isn’t from the people who attend the prayer in congregation. So it’s imperative to know, noble brothers, that the obligatory prayers are considered the daily criterion and the daily scale that the condition of an individual is known, in these five prayers that Allāh (ﷻ) obligated upon His slaves in the day and night five times.
In summary, indeed we have just bided farewell to the month of fasting, however we bided farewell to the month of fasting, we didn’t bid farewell to obedience. Obedience remains and the worship of Allāh is until we die. As Allāh (ﷻ) said,
“And worship your Lord until there comes unto you the certainty (i.e. death). (15:99)
And as He said, “O you who believe! Fear Allah (by doing all that He has ordered and by abstaining from all that He has forbidden) as He should be feared. [Obey Him, be thankful to Him, and remember Him always], and die not except in a state of Islam (as Muslims) with complete submission to Allah.” (3:102)
In other words, persevere on the Islamic acts of obedience and obligations until you meet Allāh (ﷻ) while you are upon the state of obedience, and worship, and persevering on implementing the commands of Allāh (ﷻ) and avoiding the prohibitions.
As I presented in the beginning of the speech, fasting is a school. So it’s imperative for each one fasting to benefit from this school and for the effects of the fast to remain with him until the next month of fasting, benefitting from his fasting of the month is from several aspects, from the aspect of taking care of the obligatory acts and persevering upon them and preserving it, and from the aspect of distancing oneself from the prohibitions and abandoning them. If some of the disobedient said to themselves, “I can’t abandon this particular act of disobedience.” Then he says, “In Ramadhān, I abandoned the sins I was accustomed to committing and overtook my soul.” So he benefits from the school of fasting by training his soul on abandoning acts of disobedience and leaving off sins and being distant from them. He also benefits from Ramadhān the cultivation upon noble character and excellent mannerisms and being distant from the foolish and the indecent and other than that. And it comes in the ḥadīth, “Whoever does not give up false statements (i.e. telling lies), and evil actions, Allah is not in need of his (fasting) leaving his food and drink.”
So the slave should take great care of this affair with du'ā. Asking Allāh (ﷻ) to assist him and to accept from him his deeds and to grant him success in increasing his good deeds and obedience. Verily success is in the Hands of Allāh (ﷻ) with no partners.
And we ask Allāh the Most Generous the Lord of the Magnificent Throne by His Beautiful Names and Lofty Attributes to grant us all success in every kind of good and to rectify all of our affairs and to not leave us to ourselves even for a blink of an eye and to accept from us our deeds and our speech and all of our acts of obedience with a good acceptance and to not leave us to ourselves even for a blink of an eye.
O Allāh, grant our souls its uprightness, and purify it, You are the best of those who purify. You are its guardian and master.
O Allāh, we ask You for guidance and Taqwa, for chastity and prosperity.
O Allāh, guide us to beautiful character, no one can guide to it except you, and divert us from evil character, no one can divert it except you.
O Allāh, apportion for us such fear that should serve as a barrier between us and acts of disobedience; and such obedience that will take us to Your Paradise; and such certainty that will make easy for us to bear in the calamities of this world.
O Allāh! let us enjoy our hearing, our sight and our power as long as You keep us alive and make our heirs from our own offspring, and make our revenge restricted to those who oppress us, and support us against those who are hostile to us let no tribulation afflict our Religion; let not worldly affairs be our main concern, or the limit of our knowledge, and let not those rule over us who do not show mercy to us!
O Allāh, You are free from every imperfection and praise be to You. I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance.
O Allāh send Ṣalāt and Salām upon your slave and messenger, our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.
