We also spoke about -and I’ll repeat it because it is important- those that go to Makkah with the intent to make ‘Umrah and how amazing is what they intended; because ‘Umrah in Ramadhān is equal to Hajj. And it (equal to Hajj) is in the time of the Messenger and other than it. I say this my brothers because the issue is not an issue of agreement between the scholars. The scholars didn’t agree that performing ‘Umrah in Ramadhān is equal to Hajj because the Prophet ﷺ addressed a woman who stayed behind from performing Hajj with him. So he said to her, “’Umrah in Ramadhān is equal to a Hajj.” And in another wording “with me” in other words, together with him. If you perform ‘Umrah in Ramadhān it is as if you performed Hajj with me. Due to this some of the scholars said, “Verily this ḥadīth is specific for this woman, it is not general for the Ummah.” However the majority that we see who have spoken about the ḥadīth say it is general. So I say: the ‘Umrah in Ramadhān is Sunnah, however the people fall into mistakes in regards to some things, we will mention some of them:
First: Some of them perform ‘Umrah for themselves when he first arrives then after two or three days he leaves to go to Tan’īm and perform a second ‘Umrah for his mother and after a few days he performs a third ‘Umrah for his father and after a few days he performs a fourth ‘Umrah for his grandfather and so on and so forth. And perhaps some of them perform two ‘Umrah’s in a day and you find his head is bald. He shaved his head the first time and performed another ‘Umrah. So what’s left (of his hair) for the second ‘Umrah?
Nothing, except something evil. I’ve seen a man making sa'ī between Ṣafā and Marwah, he had half of his head shaved completely. He shaved half and it was shining without any hair and the other half was full of hair. So I said to him: Why? He said: This is from my ‘Umrah I performed yesterday and this is for my ‘Umrah today. So based upon his analogy if he wanted to perform ‘Umrah four times, he would shave a fourth and for the second one, the second fourth, and for the third one, the third fourth and for the fourth the rest of his head. All of this is wrong and the reason is the people’s love for good and their ignorance of the Sharī'ah.
What is known, my brother, is that worship has two conditions, two foundations and they are: al-Ikhlāṣ and al-Mutāba’ah. Are they more diligent upon good than the companions? No by Allāh, they are not more diligent and they are not more knowledgeable of the Sharī'ah of Allāh than the companions. So let them bring one ḥadīth that the companions repeatedly performed ‘Umrah in Ramadhān or outside of Ramadhān. As for this issue, there is not even one letter, nothing authentic or weak that indicated the companions repeatedly performed ‘Umrah in Ramadhān or outside of Ramadhān. Therefore the permissibility of the person from this ‘Umrah of his, leaving to go to Tan'īm and performing another ‘Umrah, to the point ‘Aṭa- May Allāh have mercy on him- and he was a Faqīh of the people of Makkah, he said, "I don’t know those that go to Tan'īm and perform ‘Umrah, I don’t know if they are incurring sin or attaining a reward." In other words, it is as if they weren’t getting anything except fatigue, and the refuge of Allāh is sought, because they are upon other than the Sharī'ah.
