Jareer and the Hadeeth of Advice

On the authority of Jareer, may Allaah be pleased with him:

“I pledged allegiance to the Prophet - صلى الله عليه وسلم - to establish the prayer, give the Zakaat and advise every Muslim.” [Collected by al Bukhaaree and Muslim.]
[In another narration]
“I pledged allegiance to the Prophet - صلى الله عليه وسلم - to establish the prayer and give the Zakaat, so he made me say; according to my ability and to advice every Muslim.” [Collected by al Bukhaaree.]
Ibn Hibbaan narrated [this Hadeeth] by way of Abu Zur’ah ibn ‘Amru ibn Jareer on the authority of his grandfather [i.e Jareer] and added:

So whenever Jareer used to buy or sell something he used to say: “Know that what I have taken from you is more valuable than what I have given you, so choose.” [Fat-h al Baaree: 1/139]

Indeed Jareer honored this pledge, to the point that he asked his servant to buy a horse for him, so he bought one for three hundred Dirhams and brought it with its owner to Jareer. Jareer said to the owner; ‘Your horse is worth more than three hundred.’ He then bought it from him for eight hundred Dirhams. He was questioned about this, he said; ‘Indeed I pledged allegiance to the Prophet - صلى الله عليه وسلم - to give advice to every Muslim.’ It was collected by at-Tabaraanee. [Ad Deebaaj ‘ala Muslim: 1/75]

Regarding the Hadeeth of Jareer is a merit and a virtue for Jareer, may Allaah be pleased with him. It was narrated by al Haafidh Abu Qaasim at Tabaraanee with his own chain of narrators that:

Jareer told his servant to buy a horse for him, so he bought one for eight hundred Dirhams. He brought the Horse and its owner to Jareer to close the deal, so Jareer said to the horse’s owner; ‘Your horse is better that three hundred Dirhams, will you sell it for four hundred?’

The owner said: ‘Yes O Abu ‘Abdullaah.’

Jareer said: ‘Your horse is worth more than that, would you sell it for five hundred Dirhams?’

He continued to increase the price, hundred by hundred, while the owner agreed, and Jareer kept repeating that his horse was worth more than that, until the price reached eight hundred Dirhams, and he bought it for that price.

He was asked about this, so he said; ‘Indeed I pledged allegiance to the Prophet - صلى الله عليه وسلم - to give advice to every Muslim.’ [Al Minhaaj: 2/40]

Abu an Nu’maan narrated to us…on the authority of Ziyaad ibn ‘Ilaaqah who said: I heard Jareer ibn ‘Abdillaah speak on the day that al Mugheerah ibn Shu’bah died. He stood up [upon the Minbar], praised Allaah and said:

“It is upon you to have Taqwaa of Allaah alone, not associating any partners with Him, to be solemn and calm until another leader is appointed to you, for indeed he will now come.” He then said: “Ask forgiveness for you leader [al Mugheerah] for indeed he loved forgiveness.” He continued: “Amma ba’d, indeed I approached the Prophet - صلى الله عليه وسلم - and told him that I would pledge allegiance to him upon Islam. So he stipulated upon me that I advise every Muslim, so I pledged allegiance to him upon that [with these two hands of mine]. By the Lord of this Masjid, indeed I am a sincere adviser to you all.” He then sought forgiveness from his Lord and descended [from the Minbar]. [Collected by al Bukhaaree.]

A point of benefit: Specifying the Muslims with advice is due to the majority, however, advising non-Muslims is also applicable; by calling them to Islam and advising them if they seek advice.

Another point of benefit: Al Bukhaaree concluded ‘The Book of Eemaan’ with advice, indicating that he acted in accordance to this, by advising people to act upon authentic Ahaadeeth as opposed to inauthentic Ahaadeeth. He then finished off with Jareer’s sermon which expresses his own state while authoring his book.

With the statement of Jareer; ‘Indeed he will now come …’ he gestured that it is an obligation to hold fast to the legislation until a leader comes to establish it, as there will continue to be group that is victorious – and they are the Fuqahaa of the people of Hadeeth.

With his statement; ‘…seek forgiveness for your leader…’ is a gesture to seek forgiveness for him for this noble work that he presented.[1]

He then finished with; ‘…and descended [from the Minbar].’ which illustrates the closing of the chapter.

He then followed the chapter with ‘The Book of Knowledge’ because of what the Hadeeth of advice signifies, that the majority of advice takes place by teaching and learning. [Fat-h al Baaree: 1/140]

جرير وحديث النصيحة

عن جرير بن عبد الله - رضي الله عنه - ، قَالَ

بايَعْتُ النبيَ - صلى الله عليه وسلم - عَلَى إقَامِ الصَّلاَةِ ، وَإيتَاءِ الزَّكَاةِ ، وَالنُّصْحِ لِكُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ . متفقٌ عَلَيْهِ .
حديث جَريرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ
بايَعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم عَلى السَّمْعِ وَالطَّاعَةِ، فَلَقَّنَني فِيما اسْتَطَعْتُ، وَالنُّصْحِ لِكلِّ مُسْلِمٍ أخرجه البخاري
قد وفى جرير بذلك حتى أنه أمر مولاه أن يشتري له فرسا فاشترى له فرسا بثلاثمائة درهم وجاء به وبصاحبه لينقده الثمن فقال جرير لصاحب الفرس فرسك خير من ثلاثمائة ثم اشتراه منه بثمانمائة درهم فقيل له في ذلك فقال إني بايعت النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم على النصح لكل مسلم أخرجه الطبراني الديباج على مسلم 1: 175

ومما يتعلق بحديث جرير منقبة ومكرمة لجرير رضى الله عنه رواها الحافظ أبو القاسم الطبرانى باسناده اختصارها أن جريرا أمر مولاه أن يشترى له فرسا فاشترى بثلثمائة درهم وجاء به وبصاحبه لينقده الثمن فقال جرير لصاحب الفرس فرسك خير من ثلاثمائة درهم أتبيعه بأربعمائة درهم قال ذلك اليك يا أبا عبد الله فقال فرسك خير من ذلك أتبيعه بخمسمائة درهم ثم لم يزل يزيده مائة فمائة وصاحبه يرضى وجرير يقول فرسك خير إلى أن بلغ ثمانمائة درهم فاشتراه بها فقيل له فى ذلك فقال انى بايعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم النصح لكل مسلم شرح صحيح مسلم 2: 40

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو النُّعْمَانِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ عَنْ زِيَادِ بْنِ عِلَاقَةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ جَرِيرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ يَقُولُ يَوْمَ مَاتَ الْمُغِيرَةُ بْنُ شُعْبَةَ قَامَ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ وَقَالَ عَلَيْكُمْ بِاتِّقَاءِ اللَّهِ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَالْوَقَارِ وَالسَّكِينَةِ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَكُمْ أَمِيرٌ فَإِنَّمَا يَأْتِيكُمْ الْآنَ ثُمَّ قَالَ اسْتَعْفُوا لِأَمِيرِكُمْ فَإِنَّهُ كَانَ يُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَإِنِّي أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قُلْتُ أُبَايِعُكَ عَلَى الْإِسْلَامِ فَشَرَطَ عَلَيَّ وَالنُّصْحِ لِكُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ فَبَايَعْتُهُ عَلَى هَذَا وَرَبِّ هَذَا الْمَسْجِدِ إِنِّي لَنَاصِحٌ لَكُمْ ثُمَّ اسْتَغْفَرَ وَنَزَلَ

فائدة‏ ‏:‏ التقييد بالمسلم للأغلب، وإلا فالنصح للكافر معتبر بأن يدعى إلى الإسلام ويشار عليه بالصواب إذا استشار‏.

‏فائدة أخرى ‏:‏ ختم البخاري كتاب الإيمان بباب النصيحة مشيرا إلى أنه عمل بمقتضاه في الإرشاد إلى العمل بالحديث الصحيح دون السقيم، ثم ختمه بخطبة جرير المتضمنة لشرح حاله في تصنيفه فأومأ بقوله ‏"‏ فإنما يأتيكم الآن ‏"‏ إلى وجوب التمسك بالشرائع حتى يأتي من يقيمها، إذ لا تزال طائفة منصورة، وهم فقهاء أصحاب الحديث‏

وبقوله ‏"‏ استعفوا لأميركم ‏"‏ إلى طلب الدعاء له لعمله الفاضل‏

ثم ختم بقول ‏"‏ استغفر ونزل ‏"‏ فأشعر بختم الباب‏

ثم عقبه بكتاب العلم لما دل عليه حديث النصيحة أن معظمها يقع بالتعلم والتعليم – فتح الباري:1/140
