Full Name:‘Abdullaah ibn Mas’ood ibn Ghaafil ibn Habeeb ibn Shamkh ibn Makhzoom ibn Saahilah ibn Kaahil ibn al Haarith ibn Tameem ibn Sa’d ibn Hudhayl ibn Mudrikah ibn Ilyaas.
Kunya: Abu ‘Abdurahmaan al Hudhalee.
Mothers name: Ummu ‘Abd bint ‘Abd, also from Hudhayl – she was also a companion.
He embraced Islaam early and migrated the two migrations, [i.e to Ethiopia and Madeenah. He participated in the Battle of Badr as well as all other battles.
He narrated on the authority of the Messenger,صلى الله عليه و سلم , Sa’d ibn Mu’aadh, ‘Umar and Safwaan ibn ‘Asaal.
A great number of people narrated on his authority, amongst the most notable are: Abu Sa’eed al Khudree, Anas ibn Maalik, Jaabir ibn ‘Abdillaah, ibn ‘Abbaas…
He is one of the seven who narrated the greatest number of Hadeeth
Al Bukharee stated: He died in Madeenah before ‘Uthmaan.
Abu Nu’aym and others said: He died in the year 32 H, Yahyaa ibn Bukayr said he died in the year 33 H.
The Prophet said to him:
“You are a learned youth.” and this was during his early years as a Muslim.
The Messenger made a bond of brotherhood between him and Sa’d ibn Mu’aadh.
It was authentically narrated that he said:
“I took 70 Surahs from the mouth of the Messenger .”[1]
